The New York Yankees take on the Chicago White Sox. Check out our MLB odds series for our Yankees White Sox prediction and pick.
Luis Gil gets the start for the Yankees, while Dylan Cease gets the ball for the White Sox.
Luis Gil was a fill-in starter for the Yankees last year when injuries and suspensions limited their options. Gil did an entirely serviceable and respecting the job, helping to hold the rotation together and push the Yankees into the wild card game. Control was a problem for him at times, but opposing hitters did not find it easy to go against him. He has received his call-up from the minor leagues and will make his first appearance of the 2022 MLB season in this game. His familiarity with big-league hitting gives him a reasonable chance to do well in this game and reshape the Yankees White Sox odds.
Dylan Cease has a 2.38 ERA. He has made six starts this year. He has notched five starts with no more than two runs so far this season, and he has given up no more than one run in four of them. He has pitched at least five full innings in all six starts. He is pitching like a top-end-of-the-rotation stopper, the guy who puts a halt to losing streaks and can get the team back on track. He gives the White Sox another elite pitching weapon in addition to Lucas Giolito. His presence on the mound demands attention from anyone studying MLB odds.

Why The Yankees Could Cover the Spread
Quite simply, this is the hottest team in baseball. The Yankees stumbled out of the gate but have now won 15 of their last 16 games. They just swept a short two-game series from the Toronto Blue Jays and have a commanding lead in the American League East. The Yankees are 22-8 for the season and have to be thrilled at the pitching they are getting throughout their rotation, and especially from their bullpen. The Yankees have had plenty of games this year in which they didn't hit but the pitching carried the freight. The offense has gotten better in recent games, but the pitching has kept games close enough that the offense needs just one or two timely hits to win with regularity.
Luis Gil will not be intimidated, so the Yankees can enter the field with confidence in their pitcher. One also has to point out that the White Sox, near .500 in a weak division, have been one of the bigger disappointments through the first five weeks of the season. The Yankees know that the White Sox are not firing on all cylinders. They can smell the vulnerability from the other side.
Why The White Sox Could Cover the Spread
The biggest reason to go with Chicago in a Yankees White Sox pick is to trust Dylan Cease. If he isn't already a star in the big leagues, he sure is pitching like one. Cease has been supremely dependable in a rotation which has had its share of struggles, particularly from Dallas Keuchel. Cease is a cure for the White Sox's ailments and troubles in the early part of the season.
Also, while Luis Gil will be familiar with big-league pitching, it still remains that going from the minors to the majors could be an adjustment for him. It might not take Gil a lot of starts to re-settle into a big-league mindset, but it is hard to expect him to be supremely sharp in his 2022 return to the majors. This is something to think about when you formulate a Yankees White Sox prediction.
Final Yankees-White Sox Prediction & Pick
The Yankees are very, very hot, but they're bound to lose at some point. Dylan Cease is precisely the guy who can douse the flames and cool off New York's bats.
