Article Continues BelowWhy the Bruins Can Cover The Spread/Win
Boston's lack of offensive production continues to grow concerning, especially heading into this game without the likes of star players Brad Marchand, who is out with a suspension, and Patrice Bergeron, who is out with an upper body injury. The Bruins are 5-4-1 in their last ten matchups and have scored just 2.3 goals per game over that span. However, Boston's defensive play has been really picking up the pace for the Bruins as of late and should be able to lead the way for Boston down the stretch. In net for the Bruins tonight, their first option, Jeremy Swayman will get the nod. He's averaging just 2.22 goals against per game and repping a .919 save percentage on the season. Swayman will be having a lot of work to do tonight as he attempts to try and hold the Ranger's offense to as little as possible.
Why the Rangers Can Cover The Spread/Win
The Rangers haven't played a game in 14 days, but that gives plenty of time for their star players such as current Norris Trophy holder, Adam Fox to return from injuries. New York is 6-3 in their last nine games, all before the All-Star break, but are also one of the best teams at home with a 15-4-2 record, winning seven of their last eight while at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers are right in the middle of the pack when it comes to scoring though, being ranked the 15th highest rate with 3.02 goals per game. But in order to win, you have to have spectacular goaltending, which the Rangers have again tonight in current Vezina Trophy favorite, Igor Shesterkin. He's been absolutely tremendous this season, repping a 22-5-2 record so far with a .937 save percentage, and only allowing 2.10 goals against per game.
The Rangers wouldn't be where they are in the standings right now if it weren't for him, but he'll still have to bring his A-game against a short-handed Bruins team tonight if they look to start off the second half of their season on the right foot.
Final Bruins-Rangers Prediction & Pick
Despite their recent woes, the Bruins are still a very good team. However, they play without two of their star players in Marchand and Bergeron against a well-rested (could it be considered rust though?) New York Rangers team. Both teams are very good defensively, but the advantage leans towards the Rangers for their goaltending capabilities. With that said, I think New York defends their home ice and gets it done tonight against a short-handed Bruins squad.
Final Bruins-Rangers Prediction & Pick: Rangers (-152)
