The Los Angeles Kings play host to their Pacific Division rival, the Edmonton Oilers in tonight's late-game matchup. The Kings are currently in 3rd place in the Pacific Division and the Oilers are in 5th. However, they're only two points away from each other, so a win for the Oilers here could shake up the playoffs contentions for not only the Kings and Oilers but also for the Anaheim Ducks, who are tied with the Kings at 55 points. It’s time to continue our NHL odds series with an Oilers-Kings prediction and pick.

Why The Oilers Can Cover The Spread/Win

Article Continues Below

The Edmonton Oilers decided it was time for a change and so far have won back-to-back games under their new head coach, Jay Woodcroft. He'll lead his new team into Los Angeles tonight to conclude their mini California road trip after shutting out the San Jose Sharks last night, 3-0, which was goaltender Sean Skinner's first career shutout. Because this is a back-to-back game, the Oilers will most likely start 39-year-old Mike Smith, who has struggled altogether this season allowing 3.50 goals against per game with a .901 save percentage in just nine starts. The Oilers have never been known as a defensive heavy team, but they're going to have to step it up tonight and not just lean on superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl if they want to come away with a victory against a pesky LA team.

Why The Kings Can Cover The Spread/Win

This almost feels kind of like a trap game for the Kings tonight. They're playing a fast and talented Edmonton team after almost two full weeks of not playing, since February 2nd as they took down the Detroit Red Wings on the road. Key defenders Matt Roy and Mikey Anderson have been out even longer due to injury, should they be able to return tonight. The Kings are not as equipped offensively compared to Edmonton's raw talent, as they are generating the league's 20th best output. However, the real edge for Los Angeles is their goaltending In Jonathon Quick. The 36-year-old has quietly been flying under the radar this season as he's gotten older over the years, but he's still got it. Quick is 12-10-6 this season, sporting a .912 save percentage and allowing 2.60 goals per game.

If the Kings want to start the second half of their season on the right foot, they're going to heavily lean on Quick to shut the door and come out there victorious.

Final Oilers-Kings Prediction & Pick

Needless to say, both teams have really struggled offensively so far this season. The Oilers are 21-22-3 when it comes to covering the over, and the Kings are 18-28-1 when they cover the over. So both of these teams are over .500 for covering unders this season, and 6.5 is a high number for the total in a game like this. Typically you would see a 5.5 total here between two teams who thrive when it comes to covering unders, but because of Connor McDavid, oddsmakers always tweak the Oilers games total.

I have a motto that life is too short to bet the under, because it's not as fun to root for defense, especially with the talent in this league – so with that, I'm taking Oilers Moneyline (+100). The odds are nice for them, they've been buzzing with the new coach, and I think they get it done on the road tonight to extend their mini winning streak. But don't be scared to sprinkle half of a unit on the under 6.5 (-115) too, because why not?
