After a 14-day layoff since the All-Star break, the New York Rangers have claimed three out of four points possible so far. Today, they head into Ottawa to take on the Senators in this favorable matchup. The Senators are no strangers to being underdogs as they've moved up to 5-4-1 in their last ten matchups, but still very behind in the playoff race. Article Continues BelowWhy The Rangers Can Cover The Spread/Win
Despite some slightly desperate play throughout the season, the Rangers have continued to roll along, as they've managed a 4-2-1 record in their last seven games. They look to keep it going tonight in this favorable spot against a pesky Senators team who is currently short talent on offense. The Rangers have amazing talent on the back end, starting with Adam Fox and Jacob Trouba. They're the centerpieces for this New York defense, making it very hard to score against them, to the point where the Rangers are third-best in the league for goals against. New York will look to rest their superstar goaltender in Igor Shesterkin today as backup Alexandar Georgiev will get the starting nod between the pipes. He's allowing 2.99 goals per game with a .898 save percentage on the season so far as he'll look to improve against an offensively short-handed Ottawa team.
Why The Senators Can Cover The Spread/Win
The Ottawa Senators are used to being underdogs at this point as they essentially have been during every game for two straight seasons. They currently sit near the bottom of the Atlantic Division with just 41 points. Ottawa is also without some of their best players tonight in Drake Batherson and Josh Norris up front, and top defenseman Thomas Chabot on the back end. They don't necessarily have the firepower that the Rangers have, but they never make it an easy win for opposing teams. In net tonight looks to be backup Filip Gustavsson, who hasn't been great, to say the least. He's 3-8-1 through 12 games so far, allowing 3.80 goals against with a .892 save percentage on the season. He'll look to have a big step in the right direction tonight against a powerful Rangers squad.
Final Rangers-Senators Prediction & Pick
The Senators are 16-29 as underdogs this season while the Rangers are 20-6 as favorites and 9-2 as road favorites. The Senators are also without their best players yet again tonight, which doesn't help their case. New York is a much better team overall, but both teams are awful at covering overs, in fact, both teams are 17-30-1 (36%) when it comes to covering the over. However, both teams are playing backup goaltenders tonight who tend to let in quite a bit of goals. If you want, sprinkle a little something on the over, just to root for points, but ultimately I'm going to take the Rangers -1.5. I think it won't even be a contest, maybe a two-goal game at best, but that would still cover the spread.
Final Rangers-Senators Prediction & Pick: Rangers -1.5 (+126)
