Why The Rockies Will Cover The Spread/Win
Gomber is coming off a very good month of May. He had a sub-1.00 ERA, and he allowed just two earned runs in the entire month. He was at his best, and that is because three of his four starts came on the road. Gomber, as you can see above, has pretty good road numbers. It is not surprising considering his home field is Coors Field. Nonetheless, Gomber has been solid on the road this season. With the Cardinals struggling at the plate all season, Gomber should be able to have another good game in this one.
The Rockies are actually not bad offensively. They are batting .245 on the year with a hard hit percentage of almost 40. They have a tougher matchup facing Lance Lynn, but they should be able to rack up a few hits. Lynn is not striking people out the way he has in the past, so there is plenty of opportunity to put the ball in play. If the Rockies can find a few barrels, and keep the Cardinals from going to their better bullpen guys, they can win this game.
Why The Cardinals Will Cover The Spread/Win
Lance Lynn is pitching much better this year than he did last year. If you can remember, Lynn was humbled by the long ball last season. This year, he has allowed just seven home runs in his 12 starts, so he figured something out to keep the ball in play. The Rockies have hit the fifth-fewest home runs this season, so expect Lynn to keep the ball in the park in this game, as well. Doing that will help the Cardinals win this game.
Another thing to keep in mind is the Rockies offense is not great. Yes, they are batting .245 which is not too bad. However, their xBA is the third-lowest in the MLB at .235. This suggests the Rockies are getting a bit lucky offensively. Colorado also has the second-highest chase percentage, and the second-highest whiff percentage. They will swing and miss, and they will get themselves out by expanding their zone. Lynn has to take advantage of this Friday night. As long as Lynn pitches his game, the Cardinals will win.
Final Rockies-Cardinals Prediction & Pick
I do like what Gomber has done this season, especially on the road. However, I am going to take the Cardinals to win this game at home. I expect Lance Lynn to dominate the Rockies.
