The Buffalo Bills were the team that ended up taking Jake Fromm in the 2020 NFL Draft after seeing him fall to the fifth round. Despite having no previous plans of taking him, Bills GM Brandon Beane believes Fromm can be a valuable backup to Josh Allen.

“The offensive coordinator for Alabama who had to watch that chess match back and forth was Brian Daboll, who is the Bills’ offensive coordinator,” Mortensen said during ESPN’s draft coverage. “Brandon Beane, the general manager of the Bills texted me that he wasn’t planning to take Jake Fromm today, but he was on the board and thought he was too good to pass up, even though you would think the physical attributes don’t fit with that Buffalo climate. They are happy to have a guy like that in the quarterback room and backing up Josh Allen.”

With Allen as the future of their franchise, the Bills had no intention of taking a quarterback early in this year's draft. However, once Fromm was available at pick No. 167, Beane was comfortable taking the Georgia signal-caller.

Over the months leading up to the draft, Fromm was expected to be a day-two pick. In contrast, at the end of the second day of the draft, Fromm was still eagerly waiting to hear his name called.

When Buffalo took Fromm, it led a select few to believe that he could put pressure on Allen as the starter next season. Contrary to that belief, the Bills took Fromm with the sole intention of having him be a backup behind Allen.
