The Toronto Blue Jays figure to be at the forefront of the World Series race this season. With lofty expectations in 2022, the Jays will need to be firing on all cylinders in order to achieve their goal of winning a championship. Star pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu has not lived up to the billing of late, having struggled since the second half of 2021. After another disappointing start on Saturday, the Jays opted to place the struggling left-hander on the Injured List.

Ryu's struggles have been clear to see, and he'd be the first to admit he needs to be pitching better. In his two starts this season, Ryu has surrendered a league-high 11 earned runs across just 7.1 innings, striking out 5 batters and walking 2. He owns an ugly 13.50 ERA, and will now get a chance to refresh his head with the 10-day IL stint.

Officially, the Blue Jays are deeming the injury to be left forearm inflammation, but there's a good chance this is simply Charlie Montoya taking the opportunity to give one of his struggling veterans a mental reset.

Ryu's woes have persisted since the second half of last year. In the second half of the 2021 season, Ryu logged a 5.50 ERA across 14 starts, struggling particularly in the final two months. Those trials have seemingly trickled into his performance in 2022, as he looks a far cry from the stud southpaw Toronto signed on a four-year, $80 million deal back in 2020.

With Ryu headed to the IL, the Blue Jays have recalled 28-year-old left-hander Ryan Borucki to the big-league club.
