Things went south for former heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz after he lost his title to Anthony Joshua in their rematch in December 2019. In an interview with TMZ Sports, the 31-year old Mexican boxer revealed that he went through a very rough patch after the championship defeat.

“There was just this one day that I was just depressed with myself and I was weighting 310 lbs. I thought losing weight would be the big issue and learning discipline, because I lacked discipline in my whole professional career,” Ruiz says.
Andy continued … “Like I said, I was depressed, I had got on my knees, I started praying and started telling God for a new change, a new mentality, and the next day I woke up and I woke up like a brand new man and that's when I messaged Canelo and told him if he could open the doors for me, and here we are now.”
Ruiz further admitted that he had major regrets on the way he went about his life following his upset championship win over Anthony Joshua in June of 2019. Ruiz definitely shocked the world when he defeated the then-undefeated Joshua via a 7th round TKO, claiming the heavyweight championship of the world.
However, as Ruiz revealed, he felt like he lost his way after getting to the mountaintop. This eventually led to his downfall as Joshua dominated him in a unanimous decision win five months later.
Nevertheless, after going through some dark times, Ruiz was able to pick himself up. The former heavyweight champ has lost nearly 60-pounds and is gearing up for a comeback, as he faces Chris Arreola on May 1st.
