Broncos QB Case Keenum talks about playing for idol John Elway
Heading into the NFL offseason, the Denver Broncos had set out to resolve their quarterback situation that has been an issue since the departure of Peyton Manning after Super Bowl 50.
This led the franchise to ink former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Case Keenum to a two-year, $36 million deal to be their starter for the 2018 campaign. During an interview with SiriusXM Radio, it was especially a unique opportunity for him in this next chapter of his career given that he will be able to play for a team ran by his childhood idol in Hall of Famer John Elway.

“It’s a great situation. I wouldn’t trade any of the past situations I’ve been in because they made me who I am. There has been a lot of tough times. A lot of time people may be looking in on the outside thinking that they’re bad times, they’re tough times, but man it’s made me who I am and it’s prepared me for this moment. I’m excited to be the Denver Broncos quarterback….when my phone rang and it was John Elway telling me to come sign with the Broncos it feels pretty good. Especially as a kid growing up an Elway fan.”
Keenum has certainly worked his way into getting this chance after his impressive 2017 season that saw him take full advantage of the starting opportunity with the Vikings. This saw him record career-bests across the board with 3,547 yards, 22 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions while holding a 98.3 quarterback rating. He finished second in the league with a 67.8 percent completion rate and seventh in quarterback rating.
The 30-year-old now steps into a situation where he will be backed by one of the league’s most stout defenses along with having several proven veteran playmakers alongside him such as wide receivers Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. The pieces are in place for him to step up to make the Broncos into a playoff contender after a rough last couple of seasons.
The cherry on top for him happens to be that he has the trust instilled in him by his childhood idol to lead the team to much success on the football field in 2018.
