The Denver Broncos have released punter Marquette King after placing him on injured reserve, King said to Jim Trotter of NFL Network.

King also said he would not have surgery for his abductor injury but will rest and rehab for the next three months.

King sent out a tweet thanking Broncos GM John Elway and the organization.

King has not played up to his usually high standards with the Broncos this season. Broncos coach Vance Joseph even called out King last week, saying the punter needed to play better.

Entering Sunday, the 29-year-old ranked 20th among 31 qualified punters in net punting average (39.7). His 44.1 yards per punt was a career low. King's injury likely played a significant part in his significant struggles.

Prior to his short stint with the Broncos, King spent his first six seasons in the league with the Oakland Raiders. He’s been one of the best punters in the league for the past few years and was named second-team All-Pro in 2016.

However, he’s also been one of the more controversial punters in the game due to his brazen personality. He reportedly didn't get along with new Raiders coach Jon Gruden, which was likely the reason why he was released this past offseason by Oakland.

When King returns to full health and resumes performing at the high level he’s capable of, though, he shouldn’t be short of offers from other teams for his services.
