Denver Broncos legend John Elway stepped down as the team's GM last year, taking over the role of president of football operations instead. Now, it seems the 61-year-old is prepared to take another step back from the front office in 2022 as he prepares to get involved in the new ownership structure of the organization. According to 9NEWS, Elway has a new role with the Broncos for the upcoming season as an outside consultant.

Elway will be serving under Broncos GM George Paton, whom he hired as his successor ahead of the 2021 campaign. Elway has hopes of joining the Broncos' ownership group once the sale of the team is handed to a new controlling owner. Elway isn't the only legendary Broncos QB interested in a piece of ownership, as Peyton Manning has also been rumored to have an interest.

The Broncos were put up for sale this offseason and the team is currently valued just south of $4 billion. ESPN reported that the sale will likely be the largest deal for any major US sports franchise in history, surpassing the $2.4 billion Steve Cohen paid for the New York Mets in 2020 and the $2.275 billion which the Carolina Panthers sold for in 2018 to a group led by David Tepper.
