We have a new development in the Denver Broncos' ownership situation. Pat Bowlen, who recently passed away, was the majority owner of the Broncos. Years ago, he stepped aside from managing the team and placed control into a trust as he dealt with Alzheimer's.

Bowlen's brother, Bill Bowlen, had been suing to remove the trust and wrestle back control of the team. His lawsuit has now been dismissed in its entirety, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com. As Schefter writes, “this clears the way for Pat Bowlen's ownership succession plans.”

The trust had been created to ensure that the team would be passed down to one of Bowlen's seven children. 29-year-old Brittany Bowlen has been widely viewed around the NFL as the favorite to be given control over the team, although there has been some drama among the children as well.

For what it's worth, it doesn't sound like Bill plans on going away quietly. In a statement issued to Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic, his attorney's seemed to indicate they'd be pressing on.

“We are reviewing the court’s ruling dismissing Bill Bowlen’s lawsuit on procedural grounds. To that end, we would like to point out that none of the substantive issues have been decided in any court. There are currently motions pending in other proceedings that will help resolve those issues.”

The trust is currently led by team CEO Joe Ellis, who has essentially been running the team the past handful of years. The trust has moved very slowly and has been cautious about tipping their hand, so it's likely we won't know who the next owner will be for quite some time.
