It looked just a few weeks ago that Chad Kelly could get a start for the Denver Broncos at some point and now he is off the team and coach Vance Joseph says it's the best thing for the team and for Kelly. The Broncos cut Kelly Wednesday, a day after he was arrested for first-degree criminal trespassing.

“We thought it was the best thing for the Broncos and for Chad,” Joseph said via Pro Football Talk. “That’s our job. It’s to figure out the best thing for the football team. That’s why it was done.”

Joseph was asked if Kelly would still have a job was the starting quarterback but he tried to side skate the question saying he wasn't the starter, so the question was irrelevant.

“He wasn’t the starter,” Joseph said. “That’s an irrelevant question. He was the backup. He made a mistake and we had a long discussion about how to handle it. It was to waive Chad. It’s as simple as that. Very simple.”

The Broncos have Kevin Hogan on their roster and he will be elevated to the number two spot, and the team has no plans to add another quarterback, at least at this time.

“Kevin is fine,” Joseph said. “Kevin has played in games, he’s a smart guy, he’s picked it up quick and we have full confidence in Kevin.”

Joseph didn't seem super confident in his answer about the backup though, so maybe sooner rather than later the Broncos might bring in some other options to backup Case Keenum.
