The Denver Broncos have the cap space and draft picks to be an extremely active team in the offseason. According to Mike Klis of 9News, Denver is interested in signing a star running back in free agency.

Just a couple of weeks before free agency, the Broncos currently have $65.9 million in cap space, according to Spotrac. Besides the ample amount of cap space, Denver also has nine draft picks — which could turn into 10 when compensatory picks are given by the NFL.

Of course, the Broncos presently deploy a backfield that features Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman. For most fans in Denver, they would say that the running back position isn't a need for the team this offseason. However, John Elway — the GM of the Broncos — seems to feel differently.

The notable names at running back that could hit free agency include Derrick Henry, Kenyan Drake, Melvin Gordon, and Jordan Howard. After a career year with the Tennessee Titans, it's possible Henry is franchise tagged in the coming weeks.

Regardless of who the Broncos set their sights on, they would be paying them anywhere between $5-15 million a year. Instead of signing a free agent, Denver should be looking to draft a running back.

With nine chances to select a running back, there are quite a few talented running backs available in this year's draft. Also, it should be noted that Lindsay and Freeman are a formidable running back duo in the NFL. Even though the running back position isn't an issue on the roster, the Broncos are set to target one in free agency.
