Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Don Martindale had some high praise for Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield ahead of their Week 5 matchup. It appears offensive coordinator Todd Haley is not looking to be buttered up by his opponent.

Martindale went out on a limb by comparing Mayfield to the likes of Hall of Fame quarterbacks John Elway and Brett Favre. According to Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal, Haley responded to the praise with a playful jab:

Browns OC Todd Haley on Ravens DC Don Martindale saying Baker Mayfield is this generation's Brett Favre or John Elway: “He's carving a bust?”

Haley's comments may seem a bit sarcastic. However, it is easy to understand why considering Mayfield has only played two games. Perhaps he was looking to shoot down any unnecessary comparisons that may serve as a distraction at this point in his career.

The praise from Martindale may seem a bit far-fetched. Both Elway and Favre were widely considered the best quarterbacks of their generation. One solidified his Hall of Fame bid by ending his career with back-to-back Super Bowl victories while the other retired as the most decorated passer in NFL history. However, Mayfield has already shown flashes of the clutch gene that made them so great.

The rookie kicked off his career in spectacular fashion by leading the Browns to a comeback victory. He has now thrown for 496 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions while completing 59.4 percent of his passes through two games. Of course, it is still far too early to determine whether or not Mayfield will be able to walk down the same path.
