After some initial buzz about the Cleveland Browns possibly taking running back Saquon Barkley No. 1 overall, particularly after the Combine, much of the talk surrounding the team in recent weeks is that they are targeting a quarterback with that top pick. Sam Darnold has been a popular name that’s been linked to them along with Josh Allen.

But according to Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman, he’s still hearing that there’s a possibility Barkley goes No. 1 given the Giants’ apparent interest in the talented back at No. 2.

As I always warn, everyone lies around draft time. But I've been stunned at how much I keep hearing that Barkley is a possibility at No. 1. The reasoning is the Browns believe the Giants will take Barkley at No. 2 and that they can still get one of the quarterbacks they want at No. 4.

It will likely happen the opposite way. The Browns will probably take Sam Darnold first and then Barkley because it's the safe thing to do, and I don't think this front office wants to take a lot of chances.

As many draft evaluators have said, Barkley is arguably the best player in the entire draft, so the prospect of him going No. 1 overall isn’t all that farfetched. Still, it’s hard to envision that possibility, especially with so many teams still desperate to land that franchise quarterback.

Freeman is probably correct in his prediction that Cleveland will resort to the “safer” option of picking a quarterback first. Their need at that position is just so much greater, and they’ll likely want to get the player they are most confident in to fill that need.
