Tom Brady, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback with seven Super Bowl rings and a seemingly perfect life, had something to say about a particular take by Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James.
Guesting recently on HBO's The Shop, Brady got asked about his thoughts on LeBron saying that the quarterback is the greatest football player ever — but not the GOAT athlete, believing that it’s a title that can’t be given to someone who doesn’t play on both ends.
Here’s what Brady had to say about that (h/t Adam Maya of NFL.com):
“I'm not a big comparison thing like that and it's because really it just depends what style you like,” Brady said. “You could say, well, you're maybe the most accomplished. I would say, OK, yeah, I've won a lot of games, Super Bowls and so forth. But my style of play might not fit everybody else's, what their view of what that position should be. I can really just be the best with the body that I was given. There's certain things that I certainly cannot do. And I have the awareness to realize, OK, I can't do those things.
LeBron’s got a point. Tom Brady appears to have one, too. So who really wins here?
In any case, both LeBron James and Tom Brady are bound for Springfield and Canton, respectively. They each have a say on being the GOAT of their sports, but even bringing that up is like opening a can of worms.
GOAT debates are fun, but a lot of times, they just annoying because it could just come down to who shouts the loudest and thumps his chest the strongest.
The Buccaneers signal-caller can still change LeBron’s mind, though. If Brady wins another Super Bowl and brings his total rings to a mind-blowing count of eight, that would make it harder to doubt his lofty status among the all-time greats across any sports.
The Buccaneers will open the 2021 NFL season at home against the Dallas Cowboys on September 9.
