Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks have agreed to a three-year, $186 million contract extension, per Shams Charania of The Athletic. The deal, a maximum extension, comes after the  Bucks' acquisition of Damian Lillard via trade.

The Bucks' already impressive offseason got even better with this Giannis update ahead of the 2023-24 season opener. Giannis shared his excitement on X (formerly Twitter) after the news was announced.

“MILWAUKEEEEEEEEE!! Let’s get it!!!! #BucksInSix #Extended,” Antetokounmpo wrote alongside a photo of him after their 2021 championship.

Giannis Antetokounmpo staying with Bucks

Giannis' future with the Bucks was in question prior to this contract extension. Antetokounmpo previously made it known that he wanted to see the team take steps in a positive direction. Although Giannis probably didn't love seeing Jrue Holiday, his friend, move via trade, the Damian Lillard acquisition made up for it.

Milwaukee proved to Giannis that they are all in on building a contender. And sure enough, he opted to stay loyal and remain in Milwaukee.

Giannis Antetokounmpo is arguably the best player in the NBA. He's always in the MVP conversation and has already led the Bucks to a championship. His size and athleticism makes him a force to be reckoned with, and Giannis is improving his shot as well.

Had the Bucks failed to sign Giannis to an extension, he would have been one of the most coveted free agents of all-time. Now, all teams can do is try and stop him when they play Milwaukee.

One has to wonder if this contract extension would have come to fruition if the Bucks did not trade for Lillard. Perhaps he would have tested the open market. Or, he still may have opted to stay.

We won't ever find out for sure because the Bucks did indeed acquire Dame and the rest is history. Bucks fans, you have your superstar for the foreseeable future.
