NBA players and teams alike have made their respective gestures to honor Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, who passed away on Sunday in a tragic helicopter accident. For Milwaukee Bucks team co-owner Marc Lasry, he believes that it would be a good idea if all teams decided to retire Kobe's jersey numbers.
The Dallas Mavericks already took the first step in this respect, with team owner Mark Cuban recently announcing their organization's decision to retire Bryant's No. 24 jersey number. Based on Lasry's statement above, it appears that the Bucks will also be following suit.
A number of players have already gone out to do the same. Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie changed his number from No. 8 to No. 26, combining Kobe's No. 24 and the No. 2 of Gigi Bryant — Kobe's eldest daughter who was also tragically killed in the accident with his dad and seven others.
Maybe the former Bucks owner is on to something.
Orlando Magic veteran Terrence Ross (No. 8 to No. 31), Lakers guard Quinn Cook (No. 2 to No. 28), Alec Burks of the Golden State Warriors (No. 8 to No. 20), and Detroit Pistons forward Markieff Morris (No. 8 to No. 88) are also some of the first players who have swapped numbers out of respect for their fallen hero. We're sure many more will follow in the next few days.
There are no words to describe the loss of a legend, but perhaps we can all take comfort in the fact that we are all one in mourning the great Kobe Bryant. Rest in peace, Mamba.
