After losing to the Houston Texans 23-20, Jameis Winston has one game left of his rookie contract. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers 25-year-old quarterback will be a free agent at the conclusion of the 2019 campaign.

Before their loss, rumors swirled of the Bucs holding on to Winston in 2020, either using the franchise tag or the transition tag. However, after the loss, Tampa Bay coach Bruce Arians did not confirm those rumors. He denied them.

“There’s been no decision on any player. We don’t make those decisions until the end of the season,” Arians said postgame, via Jenna Laine of ESPN.

Winston — who is dealing with a fracture on his thumb — did not perform like a quarterback worth investing the future into. He threw four interceptions in the loss, including a pick-six on his attempt (Bradley Roby) and then an interception two attempts later (Justin Reid). In the fourth quarter, he threw one to Jahleel Addae that essentially sealed the loss.

Winston finished the game with a stat line that read: 25 of 48 passing for 335 yards, one touchdown, four interceptions and a 46.8 passer rating. While the Bucs weren't playing for the playoffs, his performance remains to be a disheartening one on-top of several others throughout his career.

He leads the NFL in interceptions with 28.

A Florida State product and Heisman Trophy winner, the Buccaneers made Winston the No. 1 overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft. Since becoming a Pro Bowler as a rookie, he has failed to live up to the hype brought by his draft status and collegiate resumé.
