The Arizona Cardinals defense may be without a key playmaker in Budda Baker for the foreseeable future.

Via NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport:

“#AZCardinals All-Pro S Budda Baker suffered a high-ankle sprain, sources say, a tough blow to their defense. The hope is Baker returns in 2 or 3 weeks based on the severity.”

Baker, a two-time All-Pro, and four-time Pro Bowler will be sidelined for at least the next two games.

Budda Baker has once again been a driving force on the Cardinals defense. Over their first nine games, he has recorded 71 total tackles, one tackle for loss, two quarterback hits, one forced fumble, and two defended passes.

Over his last two games, Baker has recorded 21 total tackles.

Since being drafted in the second round in 2017, Baker has become the face of this defense. In his absence, they will need several other players, across the defense, to step up.

The Cardinals currently sit at 3-6, and in last place in the NFC West. They have struggled on both sides of the ball, but the defense has had several glaring issues.

Through their last three games, the Cardinals defense has allowed a total of 99 points. In each contest, the opposing offense has scored at least 31 points. Now, without their leading tackler in Baker, they will be in for an even bigger challenge.

Chris Banjo, and Isaiah Simmons, who has finally found his footing in the NFL, could see elevated roles in the secondary.

Over their next three games, the Cardinals will be taking on the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, and Los Angeles Chargers. They could certainly have their hands full against all three of these teams.
