Former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is interested in the Arizona Cardinals' head-coaching job, according to Peter King of Pro Football Talk.
Rumor has it that current Cardinals coach Steve Wilks will be done after just one season in Arizona, as the Cardinals have gone just 3-12 this year.
McCarthy served as Packers coach from 2006 through 2018, posting a record of 125-77-2 and leading Green Bay to a Super Bowl victory during the 2010-11 campaign. He led the Packers to the playoffs nine times, including six NFC North division titles.
McCarthy was fired by Green Bay earlier in the month after a loss to the Cardinals, of all teams. At the time, the Packers were just 4-7-1, and it was becoming apparent that they were not going to make the playoffs.
That was not the only reason why McCarthy was fired, though, as his souring relationship with quarterback Aaron Rodgers also played a role in his dismissal.
The Cardinals could certainly use a coach who is going to light a fire under them.
Arizona will miss the postseason for a third straight year, a stark disappointment for a team that appeared to be on the rise in 2015 when it made it all the way to the NFC Championship Game.
The Cardinals have not had much success a franchise, period.
Since 1983, they have made the playoffs just five times. They did make the Super Bowl during the 2008-09 campaign but fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers in a thriller.
Arizona will conclude its regular season on the road against the Seattle Seahawks next weekend.
