With the Los Angeles Chargers were in the market for a tight end after losing Hunter Henry to an ACL tear last weekend.

The Chargers have signed one, but it's not the best tight end in team history, Antonio Gates. The team announced that they have signed former UCLA Bruins tight end Austin Roberts to a contract.

Roberts had 35 catches for 500 yards over the last three years at UCLA. There was a lot of talk after the Henry injury if the team would decide to bring Gates, and quarterback Phillip Rivers even thought it was a good idea.

“Well, shoot, I’d always be excited if he walked back in the door obviously,” Rivers said, via Pro Football Talk. “That’s something that Tom [Telesco] and John [Spanos] and coach [Anthony Lynn] and those guys I’m sure will discuss and see about bringing anybody in for that matter, but certainly [Gates’ return] would get my vote.”

It's unclear what kind of affect signing Austin Roberts would have on a potential reunion with the Chargers, but General Manager Tom Telesco said the team would look at all options in terms of finding a replacement for Henry.  Gates has kept training this offseason in case a team decided that they would want to sign him, according to Rivers.

He wasn’t here a ton this time of year. He was always getting himself ready with him family, with his children. I’m sure he’s in shape and will be ready if called on and that’s something he’s interested in.”
