The Los Angeles Chargers had the bye week to help heal any wounds they may have suffered thus far in the 2018 NFL season. Unfortunately, it does not appear to have made much of a difference for running back Melvin Gordon.
Gordon has been nursing a hamstring issue over the past two weeks. According to Eric Williams of ESPN, head coach Anthony Lynn is non-committal on his return versus the Seattle Seahawks:
“We’ll see,” Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said. “I don’t want to speak for Melvin, but if he’s feeling well, I know he wants to play.”
The update is certainly not an encouraging one. Gordon was forced to miss the Chargers' Week 7 matchup versus the Tennessee Titans due to a hamstring injury. It appears the extra week off was not enough to get him to 100 percent.
Gordon has quietly been one of the best running backs in the league this year. He has rushed for 466 yards and six touchdowns on 91 carries. He has also tacked on 30 catches for 279 yards and three touchdowns. His versatile skill set has become an integral part of the Chargers' offense. However, it is clear that Los Angeles may be taking a cautious approach with his return.
Even if Melvin Gordon is able to play, it will likely be in a limited capacity. Fortunately, the Chargers have a viable backup in running back Austin Ekeler. Despite Gordon's prowess as a three-down back, Ekeler has managed to etch out a nice role for himself as the complementary option. He could be poised for a heavier workload until Gordon is fully healthy.
