Chiefs’ Andy Reid doesn’t know if Chris Jones contract talks are ongoing
Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones wants a contract extension but Andy Reid doesn’t know if there are talking going on between Jones and the team.
Asked on Thursday during a press conference if the two sides were talking, Reid via Chiefs.com was very short and to the point.
“I don’t know that, I don’t how they’re talking. Or are you talking about me? I haven’t talked to him. We just go, if you’re here, you get better. If you’re not, you don’t.”
Jones is set to become a free agent in 2020 and has missed all of the team’s voluntary workouts so far this offseason. It’s unclear if he plans to hold out of the mandatory workouts to trying to get a new contract.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said earlier this offseason that they would like to get an extension done before he becomes a free agent.
There’s a lot of time to go before the season starts, and he’s certainly a guy that we’ve targeted and would love to get done,” Veach said in March via the Kansas City Star. “The conversations have started. I wouldn’t say they are heating up at a rapid pace, but you’ve got to start somewhere. We’ve had two to three of these conversations and they’re getting better.”
The Chiefs have a new defensive coordinator in Steve Spagnuolo so by Jones missing out he is missing time to learn the system but as Reid says, the only way to get better is by being at practice.
