Although the Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had no problem sticking to the game plan against the Houston Texans, the same cannot be said for his ability to manage the plastic face shield he wore in the 2020 NFL season opener.

Reid opted to wear the face shield as part of the restrictions placed in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. He admits he must do a better job of maintaining the fog that accumulated on it throughout the game, via Megan Strickland of 41 Action News:

“That was brutal,” Reid said. “I didn’t do very good with that thing. Listen, it will be better the next time. I appreciate you asking that, it was a bit of a mess.”

It did not take very long for Reid's face shield to start fogging up and it remained that way the rest of the night. Fortunately, the limited vision did not prevent him from helping Kansas City cruise to a 34-20 victory in Week 1.

Regardless, Reid appears to be adamant about taking more precautions to ensure that he maintains maximum visibility. He will have ample time to prepare with over a week until their AFC West showdown with the Los Angeles Chargers.

While Reid seems to be optimistic about being able to do the job with a face shield on, it will be interesting to see how many other coaches follow through now that they see the challenges involved. Many could opt to simply wear a mask like head coach Bill O'Brien did across the sideline.
