Kansas City Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire sustained hip and ankle injuries in their Week 15 matchup against the New Orleans Saints. The rookie is expected to be ruled out for the remainder of the regular season, but he still has a small window to return in time for the postseason, per NFL Network‘s Ian Rapoport.

Initial X-rays were negative, and now the Chiefs running back will get an MRI.

Edwards-Helaire got entangled and bent his leg awkwardly on a short run in the fourth quarter. The injury looked really bad, as he couldn't put any weight on his leg and had to be carried to the locker room. He finished the game with a total of 79 rushing yards on 14 carries.

Veteran Le'Veon Bell took over the team's rushing attack to finish the game and tallied 62 rushing yards on 15 carries and scored a rushing touchdown in the game. The Chiefs managed to withstand a late-game comeback attempt by the Saints to narrowly win a 32-29 outcome.

The reigning Super Bowl champions improved to a 13-1 record to remain atop the AFC, while the loss dropped the Saints to a 10-4 tally.

Edwards-Helaire managed to find his spot on the Chiefs' stacked offensive roster and made his presence felt all throughout the team's regular-season campaign before this injury. The Chiefs will certainly be anticipating his return back on the field in a bid to get a timely boost for the offense during their title defense in the upcoming postseason. For the season, the rookie has 803 yards and four touchdowns on 181 carries.

Even without their rookie rusher at the helm for the meantime, Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the team will aim to extend their nine-game winning streak at the expense of the skidding Atlanta Falcons for Week 16 action.
