At 23-years-old, Patrick Mahomes, quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, is in the position to be the face of the NFL for years to come.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that in order to keep Mahomes in Kansas City, the Chiefs are expected to extend Mahomes a contract after next season when the likely MVP is eligible for an extension.

According to the Schefter, league sources believe that he could land the NFL's first $200 million contract.

Schefter said that he expects the contract to dwarf the one that Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers signed last summer that pays him an annual average of $33.5 million.

The Eagles could approach quarterback Carson Wentz about re-signing, and the Rams could do the same with quarterback Jared Goff as well. But there are no assurances that either deal will get done, nor be as high as the one that Mahomes would be looking to sign in 2020.

Mahomes passed for 5,097 yards and a league-leading 50 touchdowns, which is tied for the second highest single-season total in league history. He leads Kansas City to a 12-4 record and the number one seed in the AFC playoffs in his first full year as a starter.

The Chiefs drafted Mahomes with the tenth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. In his first year in the league, Mahomes served as the backup to Chiefs starting quarterback Alex Smith. After a trade that sent Smith to the Washington Redskins, Mahomes was named the starter for the 2018 season.
