Patrick Mahomes has been on both sides of the coin when it comes to his experiences with overtime in his five years with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs QB has felt the pang of defeat in a postseason overtime period without even getting a chance to take the field. Tom Brady's New England Patriots won the coin toss during the AFC Championship Game back in 2019 and immediately scored a touchdown in the lone drive of the extra period.

But he's also been the beneficiary of a favorable coin toss. Just in the last postseason, the epic showdown against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills ended thanks to Mahomes' Chiefs getting first crack at a score – which they took advantage of with a touchdown to win the game. Given how the offenses for both teams were playing that game, it seemed like whoever won that coin toss was poised for a victory.

The NFL has now made the adjustment – at least for the postseason. Both sides will now get a chance at the football during playoff overtimes, which drew an honest reaction from the Chiefs star.

“Your job is to find a way to win the game, no matter how long it takes,” Mahomes said in an interview with Yahoo Finance Presents.

“I'm sure there'll be moments where you feel like it's a good decision. But then there will be moments when you score that touchdown first and you feel like it's a bad one. So you just go out there and play and try to win the game whatever way,” the Chiefs QB continued.

Given that Mahomes has experienced both outcomes, his words do sound like an objective truth. But the point of the new rule change is to mitigate chance playing a bigger part than it should during games. Hopefully it accomplished just that in the seasons to come.
