One of the major acquisitions the Kansas City Chiefs made this offseason was the signing of veteran wide receiver Sammy Watkins on a three-year, $48 million deal in free agency.

Initially, Watkins didn't perform at the level the franchise expected after his signing. According to Adam Teicher of ESPN, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy voiced Thursday that Watkins is starting to get on the same page with second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“Camp is all about finding your rhythm, making sure we get in sync together,” offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said. “Part of that process is making sure we're spending the right amount of time with each other but also giving [Mahomes and Watkins] an opportunity to link up a little bit more. When it's all said and done, Sammy is doing a heck of a job. He's doing a great job. He's accepted the challenge because we're not just playing him at one position. He's accepted the challenge of learning all three across the board. We want versatile football players.

“I know everybody wants to talk about what's happening on the field on game day, but I will say this: Their communication, their rhythm is starting to sync.”

The Chiefs are counting on Watkins to play a significant part in the offensive game plan this upcoming season, which was made clear by the lucrative contract he received. He is now getting paid like one of the best players at his position, which has set the table for him to potentially take up the No.1 receiving option role in the offense to finally fulfill his potential.

Watkins' pairing with Mahomes could work wonders for him to break through with his best career campaign and solidify his status as one of the top wide receivers in the game. He is heading into a situation where he's surrounded by plenty of talent such as wide receiver Tyreek Hill, tight end Travis Kelce, and running back Kareem Hunt. The presence of these other Pro Bowl-caliber players could create a lot of opportunities for him in single coverage down field.

The next couple of weeks of training camp and preseason action will be vital in helping him build further on that connection with Mahomes for the start of the 2018 campaign.
