Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu is excited for his first start with his new team, but he also expects to have a lot of emotions.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Mathieu said he expects the first game will be very emotional for himself, and also his teammates, and he knows how important it is for everyone to try to stay level and focus at the task of hand:

“It’ll be the first time really playing with my group and playing with my guys in a live game – in a game that counts,” Mathieu said, per the Chiefs' website. “It’s going to be a lot of different emotions, up and down. I think it’s my job to manage the group and make sure everybody’s focused on the next play. Just going out there with a lot of swagger and a lot of intensity.”

Mathieu also knows there will be a lot of eyes on him and a lot of new fans watching for the first time, so he needs to make sure he gives a good first impression”

“A lot of people here haven’t necessarily seen me play in a Chiefs’ uniform, so it’ll be important for me to go out there and get off to a fast start.”

Kansas City's defense was the weakness of the team last year. The Chiefs are hoping a big overhaul, which included bringing in Tyrann Mathieu, will be enough to turn the defense into a strength. He doesn't need to be a superstar, but he needs to be a solid player who can be counted on by his teammates.
