Quarterback EJ Manuel has retired from the NFL. ESPN's Field Yates tweeted the development on May 13.

The Associated Press (via Yahoo Sports) also confirmed Manuel's retirement on Monday.

Chiefs quarterback EJ Manuel, who was signed this offseason to compete for a backup job, has decided to retire after four seasons with (the) Buffalo (Bills) and one season with (the) Oakland (Raiders).

Manuel was the 16th overall pick of the Bills in the 2013 draft, going 6-11 while struggling to live up to expectations. He'd been Derek Carr's backup the past two seasons with the Raiders.

According to ESPN's official website, Manuel hasn't played in an NFL game in two years. He threw for 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions during his rookie season.

Manuel suited up in just five games for Buffalo in 2014. That year, he relinquished his starting role to Kyle Orton. Manuel had five touchdown passes and three picks during the 2014 NFL season.

Manuel continued his backup role in the 2015 and 2016 seasons. During that span, he backed up Tyrod Taylor. Manuel signed with the Oakland Raiders in 2017. He played in just two games for them, tallying one touchdown pass and one interception.

The Chiefs signed Manuel on February 22 in order to add depth and veteran leadership at the quarterback position.

Back then, Kansas City head coach Andy Reid said Manuel, who has “a good reputation throughout the league with teams he's been with,” will be “a nice addition,” per CBS Sports' Kirk Larrabee.

With Manuel's retirement, the Chiefs' quarterback roster now features Patrick Mahomes, Chad Henne, and Chase Litton.

Manuel concludes his NFL career with 3,767 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions.
