The Kansas City Chiefs decided on Friday morning to make a significant alteration to their secondary with the trade of All-Pro cornerback Marcus Peters to the Los Angeles Rams. It was a surprising move that had been in the works for the last few weeks before being finally agreed upon.

This looks to have been a culmination of the relationship between the Chiefs and Peters souring over the last several months. The distance in the connection may have been further heightened with the 25-year-old possibly requesting a trade immediately following Kansas City's disappointing 22-21 loss in the wildcard playoff game to the Tennessee Titans.

There is no certainty at this point that this was the case, but it if so it adds to the building tension on both sides that led to the Chiefs being willing to part ways with one of their best defensive players. Things had become quite rough this past season with the issues that came about with Peters' behavior on and off the field. This included him being nearly ejected from a game in early December against the New York Jets where he threw the penalty flag into the stands that resulted in a one-game suspension being handed out by the Chiefs.

It simply appears that his time in Kansas City had run its course as the organization was willing to move on from him before his rookie deal was up as he still has one more year left on his four-year contract. The team has elected to move forward with a new group at the position with Kendall Fuller, who was acquired from the Washington Redskins in the Alex Smith trade, and David Amerson, who the team signed last week.

Meanwhile, Peters is set to join Los Angeles and potentially be a part of the long-term plans in their secondary. The Rams are one of the teams on the rise coming off their first playoff appearance in well over a decade.
