Losing a game, let alone one in the playoffs, is not exactly the best precedent to making jokes, but that’s exactly what Patrick Beverley and the Los Angeles Clippers did after absorbing a bitter loss in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals at the hands of the Phoenix Suns. It wasn’t because they were taking things lightly, though. Instead, they were simply trying to defuse the pressure of being down 2-0 to Phoenix while also expressing how much they trust their head coach, Ty Lue.

Via Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN:

“We crack jokes,” Beverley said after the Game 2 loss in Phoenix. “We called T-Lue ‘Bill Belichick' with all the adjustments he makes. “He's definitely going to find a way.”

Bill Belichick, of course, is the master strategist of the New England Patriots in the NFL and a lock to make it to Canton. Lue, on the other hand, has a long way to go before he can solidify his case to be up on stage in Springfield one day. But when it comes to making key changes that ultimately work, Lue has certainly proven himself in that area, earning the trust of Beverley and the rest of the Clippers.

Take for example Lue’s decision to go small in the second round against the Utah Jazz was an instant hit, as it greatly mitigated the impact of Rudy Gobert on the series.

Trailing the Suns by two games doesn’t mean the end of the world yet for the Clippers, but it’s fair to expect Lue to pull a rabbit out of his hat to prevent LA from falling to a 3-0 hole.
