Earlier this morning, Yahoo! Sports' Shams Charania reported the Los Angeles Clippers and former Sixth Man of the Year Lou Williams were working on a contract extension. Apparently, Williams agreed to a three-year deal, but terms were not immediately disclosed. In an update to his original report, Charania says Williams' three-year deal is worth $24 million. Only $1.5 million is guaranteed for the last year of the contract.

This report caught a lot of people by surprise. Despite a season filled with jaw-dropping performances and memorable highlights, many expected the Clippers to trade Williams before the Feb 8 trade deadline, while his value was still high. Original reports said the Clippers were shipping DeAndre Jordan, but it was franchise star Blake Griffin who ended being dealt first. With Griffin gone, all signs pointed to the Clippers starting a new rebuild as they gathered young prospects and draft picks.

Jordan congratulated Williams via Twitter after hearing about his contract extension:

After spending his first seven seasons playing for the Philadelphia 76ers, Williams was never able to find a stable home. He has played for five different teams since the start of 2014. The 6-foot-1 guard averages 23.3 points, 5.3 assists, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.1 steals on 43.9 percent shooting from the field and 38 percent from behind the three-point arc.

With numbers like those, one would expect Williams to get a much bigger paycheck than an average of $8 million per year. But this will actually be the biggest contract in his career. Williams will also be 34 years old by the time his contract ends and with a lot of role players signing big deals over the last two offseasons, this is a great move for both the Clippers and Williams; the Clippers have a proven veteran scorer for a good price and Williams has financial stability for at least three more years. But more importantly for Sweet Lou, he finally feels home.
