Why Tulsa Could Cover the Spread
The Tulsa Golden Hurricane dropped to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the AAC following a 20-17 loss to Navy last week. Before their matchup against Navy, Tulsa had won back-to-back contests against Memphis and USF. On the season, the Golden Hurricane are averaging 25.4 points per game and 435 yards per game. Quarterback David Brin has thrown for 2,018 yards and eleven touchdowns. The Hurricane have weapons to limit the number of possessions and grind out an upset. This season, Tulsa has six individual 100-yard rushing games, and running backs Shamari Brooks and Deneric Prince rank 5th and 6th in the ACC, respectively, in rushing on a per-game basis.
Defensively, the Hurricane allow 32.6 points per game and 395.6 yards per game to opponents. They will have to limit a Cincinnati offense that is averaging roughly 40 points per contest. On the road, Tulsa has a 12-3 record against the spread in their last 15 away games and 23-8 against the spread in their previous 31 games against a team with a winning record.

Compared to a year ago, this Bearcats defense has improved immensely. They are 2nd in the nation in opponent points per game (15.3), 2nd in opponent points per play (0.209), and 4th in opponent yards per play (4.1). In the red zone, teams are converting just 63.16% of the time, ranking 3rd in the nation. Over their last five home games, the Bearcats are 4-1 against the spread.

Take the points with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in this AAC matchup. Tulsa holds the all-time series 17-16-2, but the Bearcats have won two straight head-to-head matchups. Tulsa's offense has enough production on the ground to be effective, which will inevitably keep the ball out of Cincy's hands. The Bearcats have failed to cover a 20-point spread in each of its last two against the relatively easy competition in Navy and Tulane. I expect the Golden Hurricane to hang around for most of the game, with a possible backdoor cover late in the 4th quarter.
