The Indianapolis Colts are closing in on hiring their new wide receiver's coach, and it's a familiar name to Colts fans. According to The Athletic's Zac Keefer, Indianapolis is likely going to hire former Colts superstar wideout Reggie Wayne.
This deal has apparently been in the works for almost a month now. It is expected to be finalized in the next couple of weeks.
Wayne is second all-time in receiving yards in Colts franchise history with 14,345 yards. He ended his career only 235 yards shy of Marvin Harrison's franchise record of 14,580. He also finished just 32 catches behind Harrison in career catches with the Colts with 1,070.
Wayne was a part of the 2006 Indianapolis team, led by Peyton Manning, that won Super Bowl XLI.
Indianapolis is in need of some help at wide receiver. It appears the Colts found a reliable, chain-moving receiver in Michael Pittman Jr. But receivers T.Y. Hilton and Zach Pascal are both set to be free agents this offseason. Considering the age and injury history of both, it's unlikely either with be with Indianapolis in 2022.
So, Wayne will likely have his work cut out for him with a bunch of new faces. Considering this will be Wayne's first coaching job since retiring from football, it might prove to be very difficult. If someone is up to the job though, it would be Wayne. He was a tactician when it came to route-running and understanding of the offense.
With recent reports that the Colts might be moving on from Carson Wentz, it might not even be known who will throw Wayne's receiving corps passes.
