The Indianapolis Colts‘ collapse in the 2021 NFL season has fans itching for change, and it looks as if they may get their wish after all. The latest rumors, from a report by Chris Mortensen, paint a “bleak” picture of quarterback Carson Wentz's future with the franchise. Per Mortensen, via Ari Meirov, there's reportedly a growing belief that Wentz will be traded or released by the Colts before March 19, the date which his $15 million base salary would become guaranteed.

Wentz is due to make $22 million in 2022, but $15 million of that will become guaranteed money on March 19. It seems as if the Colts are trying to avoid forking over such a lofty figure to a quarterback the team doesn't see as being the long-term solution, which could result in a trade or Wentz being released outright.

This is particularly worrisome for the Colts considering they just acquired Wentz from the Eagles this past offseason. The Colts traded a 2021 third-round pick to Philly, as well as a conditional 2022 second-round pick, that could become a first-round pick if Wentz played more than 75% of the team's snaps in the 2021 season. He reached that milestone with ease this year, meaning the Colts' first-round pick now belongs to the Eagles.

Considering the team is already prepared to offload its investment from last offseason, it looks like the Eagles are clear winners in this trade, though they'll still have to hit on their upcoming draft picks.

Across 17 games for the Colts, Wentz completed 62.4% of his pass attempts for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. He failed to come in clutch for Indy during their final stretch of the season, during which the Colts lost their last two games of the year and ultimately missed out on the playoffs.
