The NFL has officially adopted modified COVID-19 protocols in accordance with the updated CDC guidelines, which will drastically shorten the time needed for an asymptomatic player to return from the standard isolation period, whether or not they are vaccinated, according to Tom Pelissero. One player in particular comes to mind among those who will benefit from the rule change, and that's Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz.

Wentz tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, and because he remains unvaccinated the quarterback was expected to have to be away from team facilities for at least 10 days. That lengthy absence would see the Colts QB sidelined for the team's Week 17 clash with the Las Vegas Raiders. However, due to the updated COVID protocols, Wentz will have a chance to suit up on Sunday.

Because the updated protocols have reduced the isolation period from 10 days to five days, Wentz would be able to return from his isolation in time to take part in Sunday's matchup, so long as he can return two negative tests in a row. That's huge news for the Colts, who were on the verge of facing quite the conundrum at the quarterback position. Should Wentz be forced to miss Sunday's game, the Colts would likely be forced to rely on backup Sam Ehlinger, who has minimal NFL experience.

Fortunately for Wentz and the Colts, this latest update gives their quarterback a chance at getting back to action before one of the most critical games of the year, one with playoff implications for many teams, not just those involved. There's no guarantee Wentz will be able to play, but this certainly bodes well for his chances at doing so.
