Colts QB Jacoby Brissett says ‘I want to be a starter in this league’
Jacoby Brissett is without question one of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL. The Indianapolis Colts have been much more comfortable with him on the roster since acquiring him. Especially this past season, with Andrew Luck returning, the Colts wanted to make sure that they were set if they needed to utilize their backup.
Unfortunately, Brissett is getting the itch to start again. During the 2017 season with the Colts as a starter, Brissett showed off a big arm and would likely be of interest to a few teams around the NFL.
Brissett talked about wanting to start in the NFL in a quote shared by NFL.com.
“I want to be a starter in this league. If that’s what you’re asking me, yeah, I want to be a starter in this league. Everybody in this room wants to be a starter. Nobody wants to be a backup.”
As mentioned, Brissett had a very successful but short run as the Colts’ starter. He played all 16 games in 2017 for the Colts, completing 58.8 percent of his passes for 3,098 yards, 13 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Brissett also rushed for 260 yards and four touchdowns on the season.
Chris Ballard has reiterated that he has no plans to trade Brissett this offseason. That means another full season as a backup in Indianapolis. Brissett has just one season left on his contract and can test free agency following the 2019 season.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Brissett. He wants to start and will have that opportunity after next season.
Expect to see Brissett back with the Colts next season. Ballard could change his mind and try to get some value for his backup this offseason or ahead of the trade deadline next year. Indianapolis could also decide to keep a quality backup for one more season and then let him walk in free agency.
