Indianapolis Colts quarterback Chad Kelly will be suspended without pay for the first two games of the 2019 season, the NFL announced on Friday. The suspension stems from his October arrest for first-degree trespassing.
Kelly was signed by the Colts on May 20th after participating in the team's rookie mini-camp on a try-out basis. He'll battle throughout the offseason with Phillip Walker, an undrafted free agent in 2017 who's spent the past two seasons on the team's practice squad, to be Indianapolis' third quarterback behind franchise player Andrew Luck and solid second-stringer Jacoby Brissett. The Colts also kept four quarterbacks on the offseason roster a year ago, ultimately leaving only Luck and Brissett on the regular-season roster.
In October, as a member of the Denver Broncos, Kelly entered the home of a couple in suburban Denver late at night, sat down on the couch, and began “mumbling incoherently.” He sat next to the female homeowner, who was holding her young baby. The man who lived in the house then hit Kelly with a vacuum tube while shouting at him to leave the premises. Those with knowledge of the incident believe Kelly, dressed in Cowboy garb, was coming from a nearby Halloween party hosted by Broncos superstar Von Miller.
The 25-year-old ultimately pleaded guilty second-degree misdemeanor trespassing.
A seventh-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Kelly, who also dealt with legal troubles in college, missed the entirely of his rookie season after undergoing surgery on his wrist. He was released by the Broncos on October 24th, mere hours after his arrest.
