Philip Rivers has some decisions to make with respect to his future. So do the Indianapolis Colts.

Rivers, 39, has yet to decide whether he will try to play again in 2021. The Colts will give him time to make that decision, but general manager Chris Ballard revealed the team also needs to take time to weigh the future of the quarterback position:

“If this was a 30-year-old or 35-year-old Philip Rivers, we're not even having this talk,” Ballard said, via Zak Keefer of The Athletic. But he's 39 and we need to think this through.”

The Colts signed Philip Rivers to a one-year contract last offseason after Jacoby Brissett produced middling results in 2019 following the sudden retirement of franchise quarterback Andrew Luck.

Rivers put up strong numbers, completing 68.0 percent of his passes for 4,169 yards and 24 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. He also averaged 7.7 yards gained per pass attempt, guiding the Colts to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth. Indy fell just shy against the Buffalo Bills this past weekend.

However, there is no telling how the Colts will address the quarterback position this spring. Indy drafted Jacob Eason last April, but Ballard hinted the Colts need to find out more about Eason before throwing him into the fire.

There has been some speculation the Colts could pursue Carson Wentz in a trade, reuniting him with Frank Reich. But the firing of Doug Pederson has apparently eased some of the tension between Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles. Perhaps Indy could pivot to someone like Matthew Stafford or Deshaun Watson.

Alternatively, it is possible Philip Rivers will be back under center for the Colts next year. But all parties need time to think about the future.
