New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels made headlines for backing out of his deal to become the new head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Needless to say, former coach and NFL analyst Tony Dungy was not happy with the decision.

Although McDaniels is not obligated to follow through on his initial agreement, the same cannot be said for the assistants who have since signed their contracts already. Dungy took to Twitter to express his disgust with the Patriots coach reneging on the deal:

“I can tell you there is NO excuse big enough to justify this,” Dungy wrote. “It’s one thing to go back on your word to an organization. But having assistant coaches leave jobs to go with you then leave them out to dry is indefensible.”

Although there are those who sympathize with McDaniels' situation, Dungy feels it is the new assistant coaches that were brought in under him that got the short end of the deal.

“You make those decisions before you say I Do. Don’t get married start a family then say I changed my mind. He didn’t sign the contract but he said I Do,” Dungy wrote. “That is common decency and integrity. You don’t do that to the families of your peers.”

It goes without saying that McDaniels' decision was bound to have some serious repercussions. Not only did he taint his reputation for future hires, but his agent has since announced he will part ways with him as well.

Of course, there may be an added bias for Dungy when it comes to Indianapolis given his longevity and success there. Regardless, there is no denying that the Colts and their new additions have gotten the raw end of the deal.
