It was just at the outset of training camp that the Indianapolis Colts had a nightmarish scenario unfolding with quarterback Carson Wentz and all-pro offensive guard Quenton Nelson both suffered foot injuries that required surgery.

The injuries sent the Colts into scramble mode and at the time, it looked as though Jacob Eason would be the Week 1 starter for Indianapolis. While this is still possible, Chris Mortensen of ESPN seems to think otherwise.

Wentz trending towards starting the opener is quite the turnaround after the initial diagnosis suggested it would take 5-11 weeks for him to recover from his foot surgery.

The Colts acquired Wentz in the offseason from the Philadelphia Eagles and reunited him with Frank Reich, who coached Wentz in Philly at one point in time.

After Philip Rivers decided to retire, the Colts needed to address the quarterback spot and did so by getting Wentz. It's a roster loaded with talent on both sides of the ball and there's a case to be made that the Colts were (or are) a solid QB away from being a Super Bowl contender.

They hope to have that answer to the puzzle via Carson Wentz and knowing that he is now trending towards starting Week 1 has to have Reich and the Colts feeling giddy.

It can't go without noting that Mortensen also mentioned Nelson is trending towards starting the opener as well for the Colts. Indy very well may go from a situation where they would be without their all-pro guard and starting quarterback for a chunk of the season to both starting in Week 1.
