While there was early doubt on whether Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz would even share the field with Terry McLaurin in the 2022 season, such speculation was put to rest last week. McLaurin ended up reaching an agreement with Washington team officials on a three-year contract extension deal worth $71 million.

The attention for McLaurin is now set on his new starting quarterback in Wentz. The Commanders went all out to acquire Wentz from the Indianapolis Colts in March, which came following a roller-coaster campaign from the veteran passer in the 2021 season.

McLaurin did not get a chance to build keen chemistry with Wentz during the Commanders’ OTAs and mandatory minicamp, as the wideout held out amid his extension dilemma with the team. Nonetheless, McLaurin, as he noted during a press conference on Wednesday for his new contract, is “excited to see” what Wentz will bring to Washington’s offense this year.

“One thing I think that’s stuck out about Carson, is just, he’s a very personable guy,” McLaurin said. “He’s somebody that, we’ve connected on a very personal level since he’s gotten here. And even throughout the process, he was reaching out to me, checking in on me.

“And that’s why I can’t wait to get out there and start throwing with him, because now we get to put the football together and we get to start to form that connection on the field. But personally, I’m really excited to see what he does.”

Just from what he has watched from Wentz, McLaurin sees quite a “confident” passer in the one-time Pro Bowler.

“And his toughness in the pocket, I don’t think a lot of people give him enough credit — he stands back there until the last moment, which really helps receivers get that extra separation or that time to finish their routes off,” McLaurin said.

“A guy who’s back there and confident, as a receiver, and as a receiver group, I think we’re going to try to have a collective group by committee and help him out to be the best that he can.”

Wentz will next get a crucial opportunity to work with McLaurin later this month at the start of the Commanders' training camp schedule.
