Much attention at the start of the Washington Commanders’ OTAs centered on the absence of wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

The versatile wideout is at a standstill regarding his future at Washington, as he is set to become a free agent next year. He reportedly does not plan on featuring in any offseason “on-field work” amid the current dilemma about his contract.

Commanders defensive end Jonathan Allen knows from personal experience on the situation that McLaurin has been dealing with over the past months. Allen was also in a contract dilemma with Commanders team officials in 2021 until they ultimately came to terms on a four-year, $72 million deal last July.

From Allen’s viewpoint, as he noted during a press conference at the Commanders' OTAs this week, he understands McLaurin's stance on this matter.

“It's tough,” Allen said. “Everyone says ‘Don't take it personal.' But your whole life is about to change. It's a very personal experience.

“I see it from both sides, the organization side and the players' side. I'm always going to side with the player because I'm a player. But I'm sure they're going to handle it the right way.”

Multiple wide receivers have signed off on new extension deals in the offseason, and Allen believes that McLaurin’s time will come when he will reach such an agreement with Washington.

“Terry is a guy you want to build a team around,” Allen said. “He represents everything we want to build around here.

“I'm confident we'll get something done.”

It will be noteworthy to see on whether McLaurin will decide to show up for the continuation of the Commanders’ OTAs schedule on Tuesday.
