Why USA Could Win This Game
As said above, there is a huge wave of confidence in the USA team before this match. They secured a place in the World Cup after a disappointing omission from the 2018 edition, but there are more causes for optimism. It is their young guns that have been playing out of their skin, giving USMNT a sense of what the future might hold. As Grenada are a weaker team, with all due respect, it should be the younger players that are given the chance to play – and they have shown they can perform.
The biggest reason why the USA could and likely will win this game is that they are just better. This is a team that just beat a World Cup team in Morocco 3-0, playing at home in Austin, Texas, against the 170th-ranked team in the world. This should be nothing more than a tougher training session for the US team, as they look to prepare more and more for a positive result in Qatar come the end of the year.
One additional reason could be that players that might not be starters for the USA team will be given a chance to play, meaning that they could play well and impress. It would be a huge motivation for them to perform well in this game and possibly earn a spot on the plane to Qatar. Playing in the World Cup is a true privilege, so any player given the field tonight for the USMNT will be playing his heart out – thus giving the US a higher chance to win.
Why Grenada Could Win This Game
All common sense and football knowledge would say that Grenada do not have a chance in this game. They are playing against a side that is playing in the World Cup, while Grenada is usually a bottom-feeding team that usually falls through in the first part of the World Cup qualification. However, there have been surprises in football and it could be a huge reason why Granada has a chance. Just a few days back, the tiny nation of Gibraltar took a point off of Bulgaria, so why would not Grenada have a shot against the US?
An additional chance for Grenada would be the fact that the US might not take the Nations League that seriously. It is true they have won it in its inaugural season, but with the World Cup coming up, they might conserve energy for tougher matchups. They will likely field a weaker team and while the argument above about them playing better to possibly secure a spot in the World Cup squad stands, they are still weaker players than the starting lineup for USMNT.
Aside from these two reasons, Grenada could also look for their strength in the fact that they have had some positive results in the past. They almost won against El Salvador just a few days back, falling to an equalizer in the 88th minute. This is the same El Salvador that got a point off of the US in their World Cup qualification third round, so there is some precedent for Grenada to believe they have a shot in this game.
