The Dallas Cowboys have engaged in contract extension talks with wide receiver Amari Cooper, but Cooper may be waiting to see what kind of deal Atlanta Falcons wideout Julio Jones gets before he gets deep into discussions, according to Clarence Hill Jr. of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
Cooper is entering the final year of his current deal and is scheduled to make $13.9 million in 2019.
The Cowboys acquired Cooper in a midseason trade with the Oakland Raiders this past year. In nine games with Dallas, the 24-year-old hauled in 53 receptions for 725 yards and six touchdowns. On the season overall, Cooper caught 75 passes for 1,005 yards and seven scores en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.
Cooper, who played his collegiate football at the University of Alabama, was originally selected by the Raiders with the fourth overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft.
He had a spectacular rookie campaign, snaring 72 balls for 1,070 yards while reaching the end zone six times, making the Pro Bowl as a result. Then, the following year, Cooper was even better, registering 83 catches for 1,153 yards and five touchdowns, earning another Pro Bowl selection.
The Miami native then struggled mightily in 2017, dropping a litany of passes and finishing with just 48 receptions for 680 yards and seven scores.
However, Cooper got back on track this past season, and now, he is due for a big deal as a result.
Dallas won 10 games and captured the NFC East division title in 2018. The Cowboys then defeated the Seattle Seahawks in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs before falling to the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round a week later.
