The Dallas Cowboys might hail from Texas but, for the last eight years, they have held training camp in Oxnard, California.

But in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, how likely is it the team can return for a ninth straight year?

David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reported the Cowboys remain optimistic they will still be able to hold training camp in Oxnard, and the city appears inclined to accommodating the team:

“The deadline to commit to holding camp in Oxnard has been pushed back to June to give the Cowboys more time. City officials have made it clear they are willing to accommodate whatever the Cowboys require — delaying the start of camp, altering its length or not allowing fans to watch practice — to keep their relationship intact.

“‘On our side, we will assure we will meet whatever needs they have regarding their safety,' said Alex Nguyen, Oxnard’s city manager. ‘A training camp that is not open to the public, that would make sense. Only a certain number of people attending, that would make sense.'

“‘The fields we have and the hotel adjacent to it are completely conducive to a closed and secure compound. It can definitely work.'

“‘We are waiting to hear.'”

Moore also reported the Cowboys have asked for an extension into June before determining whether they will hold camp in Oxnard, though there seems to be even more fluidity on the city's part.

There are a number of potential hurdles, such as the economic downsides to camp being closed to fans as well as testing capabilities.

Still, city leadership seems motivated to find a route which will allow the Cowboys to safely return to Oxnard for training camp.
