The New England patriots certainly stole headlines on roster cutdown day as they released veteran quarterback Cam Newton to pave the way for rookie Mac Jones. Now, Newton is suddenly a free agent with the regular season less than two weeks away. One team that has been reported to have interest in him is the Dallas Cowboys.

According to Josina Anderson, the Cowboys and Jerry Jones are doing their due diligence on Newton as they try and find a suitable backup for Dak Prescott.

This would make sense for both parties as Newton's opportunities have suddenly shrunk as teams have been cutting down their rosters on Tuesday. The Cowboys themselves made some changes to their quarterback room on Tuesday by releasing Ben DiNucci and Garrett Gilbert, leaving only Copper Rush as the lone gun-slinger on the roster besides Prescott.

Of course, the Cowboys will presumably wait to see who else gets released, but Jerry Jones can't feel good about having just Cooper Rush as the backup to Prescott, who missed much of last season after suffering an injury. In turn, the team turned to Andy Dalton and things went south from thereon.

Newton and Prescott together would be interesting, to say the least, and the Cowboys definitely feel like a legitimate possibility for the veteran to go to.
